Tethered Balloon Experience Near Giza Pyramids Prepares for Trials

A new tethered balloon experience near the Giza Pyramids is preparing to begin trial operations following an inspection by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities.

The project is being implemented by Tashreef for Tourism Marketing in collaboration with French company Aerophile, and is described by the ministry as the first attraction of its kind around the site.

The balloon will rise vertically to a height of around 150 metres while remaining tethered to the ground, with each experience lasting approximately 15 minutes. Visitors will be able to take in panoramic views of the Giza Plateau while listening to an audio guide covering the area and its principal monuments.

The interpretation has been prepared under the supervision of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and will be available in 12 languages through dedicated glasses and headsets.

During the inspection, the minister reviewed the project’s operating systems, safety measures, environmental requirements and provisions intended to preserve the archaeological character and visual identity of the surrounding area.

Aerophile said the installation relies on lightweight prefabricated structures positioned above ground, allowing them to be assembled and dismantled without excavation or concrete foundations. The company said this avoids disturbing the soil or nearby archaeological remains.

The balloon site is located in the desert outside the immediate archaeological boundaries, approximately two kilometres from the pyramids and 2.2 kilometres from the Sphinx. According to the company, the distance was selected to limit its impact on the site’s panoramic views.

The system is designed to travel only vertically, with the balloon remaining permanently connected to its ground installation throughout operation.
