Self-Driving Cars Just Got Their Own Licence Plates in Abu Dhabi
New blue plates will distinguish autonomous vehicles operating in testing programmes and commercial services.
Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Integrated Transport Centre under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has introduced dedicated licence plates for self-driving vehicles, creating a unified system to identify autonomous vehicles operating in both testing programmes and commercial services.
The new blue licence plates feature clear classifications, with 'Auto Drive' assigned to vehicles providing commercial autonomous transport services and 'Test' used for vehicles participating in pilot and testing programmes. According to Abu Dhabi Mobility, the system is intended to support road safety, improve regulatory oversight and ensure operators comply with approved technical and operational standards.
The authority has also inaugurated a central control room dedicated to monitoring autonomous vehicle operations across the emirate. The facility uses real-time monitoring and data analysis systems to track vehicle movements, oversee routes and speeds, coordinate emergency responses, manage permits and support the approval of operational routes.
Separately, Abu Dhabi has issued new guidelines governing the testing of autonomous and remotely operated small marine vessels. The framework introduces a mandatory permitting system for trials, with measures aimed at maintaining maritime safety, protecting lives and property, and safeguarding the marine environment.
