Imam Turki Reserve Records 184 Bird Species Along Migration Routes
Located near Rafha, the site sits on major migration pathways linking Africa, Asia and Europe.
Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve has recorded 184 bird species across its landscapes, reflecting its position along major migratory routes in the region.
The count includes both resident species and migratory birds that pass through the reserve seasonally, using it as a resting and feeding point during long-distance journeys.
Situated near Rafha, the reserve spans approximately 91,500 square kilometres, making it one of the largest protected areas in the Kingdom. Its location places it along key migration pathways connecting Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Officials said the diversity of species reflects the ecological conditions of the reserve, where seasonal changes in weather, food availability, and breeding cycles drive bird movement across continents.
The data highlights the role of such sites in supporting avian biodiversity and monitoring migration patterns, with the reserve serving as a reference point for tracking species that rely on stopover habitats.
The figures were shared in conjunction with World Migratory Bird Day, which focuses on the importance of protecting habitats used by birds during migration.
