GEMS to Roll Out AI Teacher Avatars Across UAE Schools

GEMS Education will introduce AI-powered digital personas of teachers across its UAE schools, giving more than 200,000 pupils access to academic support outside classroom hours.

Developed with Napster, the system will initially launch at GEMS School of Research and Innovation before expanding across the network by the end of the year. Pupils will be able to use the personas for curriculum support and guided practice in multiple languages. GEMS stresses that these are not intended as digital replicas of teachers: each persona is a configured AI identity with an approved role, knowledge base, tone, permissions and safeguards.

Teacher participation will be voluntary. Any use of a staff member’s face or voice would require explicit consent and defined usage rights, with teachers able to update, pause or withdraw their representation. GEMS said the tools cannot take on professional, pastoral or safeguarding responsibilities, and their outputs will remain subject to human oversight.

The plans have drawn cautious support from parents and educators, particularly for after-hours tutoring, alongside concerns over AI hallucinations, privacy and children becoming too reliant on the technology. Education specialists have also stressed the need for clear monitoring and limits on where AI assistance ends and human teaching begins.
