Egypt’s First Renewable Energy Powered Boat Sails in Sharm El Sheikh
An eco-friendly boat powered by solar and wind energy was introduced in Sharm El Sheikh.
An eco-friendly boat powered entirely by renewable energy has begun operating in Sharm El Sheikh, marking a step towards more sustainable marine tourism in the Red Sea.
The vessel was showcased during a field visit on April 25th, 2026, attended by Manal Awad and South Sinai Governor Ismail Kamal, who toured dive sites and marine activities, including areas within Ras Mohamed.
According to project developers, the boat operates using solar energy for onboard systems and wind power for propulsion, supported by electric motors and battery storage.
It is constructed from lightweight fibreglass and includes a desalination system that converts seawater into potable water, allowing for extended periods at sea.
The project is positioned within broader efforts to promote environmentally responsible tourism, particularly in protected marine areas known for coral reefs and biodiversity.
During the visit, officials reviewed environmental measures linked to tourism activity, including systems for collecting solid waste from yachts and boats operating in the area.
Additional directives included upgrading mooring points at dive sites, maintaining environmental monitoring vessels and increasing patrol coverage across marine reserves.
