Award-winning Egyptian architect and environmental policy specialist Sarah El Battouty has become the first Egyptian woman to join the Earthshot Prize Cities & States Taskforce. Since 2022, El Battouty has served as a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Global Ambassador.
El Battouty is also the founder of ECOnsult, an environmental consultancy that has developed green-certified and net-zero buildings in Egypt for the past two decades, with work focusing on integrating sustainable design with commercial and civic projects. She has also worked as the official advisor to President Abdelfattah El-Sisi on sustainable development.
On the Earthshot Taskforce, El Battouty joins a coalition of policy experts, corporate entities, and financial institutions tasked with scaling localised climate solutions to a global level. Because urban areas generate more than 70% of global emissions, the taskforce focuses on accelerating the adoption of sustainable urban innovations by addressing financial and regulatory barriers. In this role, El Battouty is expected to utilise her experience in regional sustainable development to help connect local public-sector projects with global investment networks.
