Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority Launches Date Palm Documentation Program

The Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority has launched a new initiative to identify, register and classify newly developed and rare date palm varieties, establishing a scientific framework to protect genetic diversity and support research into sustainable cultivation.

Announced during the 22nd Liwa Dates Festival under the slogan 'Scientific Documentation… Protecting Rights… Supporting Sustainability,' the programme introduces unified standards for documenting new varieties while creating a national database to support the UAE's agricultural heritage sector.

According to the Authority, the initiative will provide farmers with a clear process for identifying, naming and authenticating new date palm varieties while recognising their innovations and encouraging scientific research and investment.

Farmers can submit applications through the Falak Al Namoos app by uploading photographs and supporting documentation. Submitted varieties will then undergo technical evaluation and field inspections before approved entries are archived and added to the national database.

To qualify, a variety must be genuinely new and previously undocumented, with distinctive characteristics such as fruit quality, taste and appearance. It must also demonstrate stable traits, commercial potential and consistent performance across different seasons and environmental conditions.

The documentation committee comprises specialists in cultivation, variety identification, tissue culture and genetic fingerprinting, with the Authority saying the technical review process is intended to protect farmers' intellectual property rights while supporting future agricultural research.
