From a humble kitchen in Mohandessin, Cairo, Egyptian charity initiative People’s Needs cooks, packs and distributes 4,000 meals a day for 30 days throughout Ramadan.
The menu changes every day, but the volume of meals is the same. Delivered by volunteers, the meals reach people in Ezbet Khairallah, Sayeda Zainab, and Manshiyet Al-Bakri, as well as areas in 6 October with high refugee populations and orphanages.
When People’s Needs was founded nine years ago, the initiative could only supply 150 meals a day to a limited circle of communities in need.
Gradually, they built a sturdy infrastructure that has grown to feed thousands of people across the capital, alongside 15 decentralised kitchens in six other governorates.
The People’s Needs kitchen is, as a result, incredibly fast-paced.
The cooks start preparing meals at dawn and continue well into the afternoon. In parallel, volunteers package the meals complete with dates, juice, dessert and utensils, and prepare them for delivery. On a daily basis, an average of about 60 people operate the process.
