Ahmed Malek to Be Honoured at 2027 Luxor African Film Festival
The festival will also dedicate its 2027 edition to late Moroccan musician Abdelwahab Doukali.
Luxor African Film Festival will hold its 16th edition in Luxor from March 25th to 31st, 2027, with Egyptian actor Ahmed Malek set to be honoured during the event.
Malek received the festival’s Best Actor award during the previous edition for his role in 'Colonia' directed by Mohamed Siam. The festival will also dedicate its 2027 edition to late Moroccan musician Abdelwahab Doukali in recognition of his contributions to Arab and African cinema through music.
The upcoming edition will place a special focus on East African cinema, highlighting filmmaking developments across countries including Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, and South Sudan.
According to the festival, the programme will explore themes including identity, women, and political and social change, alongside shifts in production techniques and storytelling that have expanded the region’s international festival presence since the early 2000s.
The edition will include a dedicated book on 21st-century East African cinema, a main seminar on the future of filmmaking in the region, and a panorama programme showcasing key films.
Azza El-Husseini, co-founder and director of the festival, announced the plans while attending the current edition of Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, where she is meeting African filmmakers and exploring partnership opportunities with supporting institutions.
The festival is organised in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and supported by the ministries of foreign affairs, tourism and antiquities, youth and sports, alongside Luxor Governorate.
