Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have announced a new oil discovery in the Partitioned Neutral Zone, the first since production resumed in 2020. The find was made in the North Wafra Wara-Burgan field, around five kilometres north of the existing Wafra field. Crude oil flowed from the Wara reservoir in the North Wafra (Wara-Burgan-1) well at a rate exceeding 500 barrels per day, with an API gravity between 26 and 27 degrees, classifying it as medium-grade crude.
The Wafra Joint Operations is a collaboration between Saudi Arabia Chevron and Kuwait Gulf Oil Company (KGOC). The Partitioned Neutral Zone, covering roughly 5,770 square kilometres, is jointly managed by both countries for exploration and production. Operations in its two main fields, Wafra and Khafji, were halted in 2014 and 2015 due to operational disputes but resumed in 2020 following a bilateral agreement.
