Giza Master Plan Targets Hotel Expansion for Grand Egyptian Museum
Part of Egypt’s push to reach 30 million annual tourists by 2028, the plan scales hotels around the pyramids for Grand Egyptian Museum visitors.
A tourism master plan for the area surrounding the Giza Pyramids will expand hotel room capacity by 2040 to accommodate visitors to the Grand Egyptian Museum. The expansion seeks to attract global hotel brands and establish modern entertainment and hospitality districts in areas surrounding the Pyramids — aiming to blend heritage with contemporary amenities. Assistant Minister for Housing Abdel Khalek Ibrahim noted that while new developments will be made, preserving the visual identity of the ancient monuments remains a priority. This development push comes as part of a broader national tourism strategy to double annual visitor numbers to 30 million by 2028. The GEM — located just two kilometres from the Pyramids — is central to the plan and expected to shift the tourist focus of Cairo’s heritage landscape.
