Food Self-Sufficiency In Saudi Arabia Tops 100% for Several Products

Food self-sufficiency in Saudi Arabia exceeded 100% for several animal and plant products in 2024, with shrimp at 149%, dairy at 131% and table eggs at 103%, according to the General Authority for Statistics. Vegetables also met or exceeded domestic needs, including eggplant at 105%, okra at 102% and cucumber at 101%, while courgette reached 100%. Among fruits, dates recorded 121%, and figs reached 99%.
In annual comparisons, the data showed rises across selected items. Onion production increased by 41.2%, tomatoes by 9.2% and fish by 8.2%, while poultry self-sufficiency rose by 1.4%. The figures reflect changes recorded between 2023 and 2024 across these categories.
Per capita availability for consumption in 2024 stood at 52.1 kilograms of rice, 35.8 kilograms of dates, 20.5 kilograms of onions and 19.6 kilograms of tomatoes. For animal products, the per capita totals were 70.3 litres of milk, 46.9 kilograms of poultry and 235 eggs annually.
The General Authority for Statistics stated that the results are based on its field surveys and administrative records from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, the General Authority for Food Security and the Agricultural Development Fund. Data were collected and analysed using established methodologies and quality standards to produce the indicators.
