The awarding body cited Egypt’s efforts in preserving its historical and cultural heritage and promoting these assets to travellers as key reasons for the recognition.

Egypt has been awarded the title of Best Heritage Destination – Premium Segment at the World Travel Awards, presented during the annual forum held in Brussels. The accolade was accepted on behalf of Egypt by Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. The awarding body cited Egypt’s efforts in preserving its historical and cultural heritage and promoting these assets to travellers as key reasons for the recognition. The country’s heritage portfolio that influenced the decision includes the recent removal of Deir Abu Mina in Alexandria from the endangered UNESCO list and the ongoing archaeological work across numerous sites. During his acceptance speech, the minister highlighted that incoming tourist numbers have seen a 21% increase compared to the previous year, and noted that nearly 300 foreign archaeological missions are currently operating in Egypt.
