Cairo’s Giza Palace Hotel & Spa Turns ‘I Do’ Into an All-Day Affair

There is a strange, suspended stretch of time on any wedding day, right after the suits are pressed but with the cake still waiting to be ceremoniously cut, that belongs entirely to the bride and groom. At Giza Palace Hotel & Spa in West Cairo, those final moments before the ceremony don’t need to involve checking the seating chart for the 47th time or pretending not to be nervous. Instead, there’s a 1,900-square-metre spa to disappear into, breakfast to take your sweet time over and a poolside perch where even the wedding planner can’t nag you about the final details.

Now, for the wedding that has already outgrown the definition of “small”, there’s the Palace Ballroom with its grand interiors, chandeliers and enough space for 1,000 guests, which means you’ll have just about enough room for the extended family, the friends of friends and everyone your mother somehow convinced you needed on the final list. But, for something more open-air, the Palace Terrace takes the party outside, where there’s room for the uncles to cool off, the cousins to catch up and everyone to eventually find their way back to the dance floor.

And because no Egyptian nuptials are complete without feeding enough people to qualify as a small census, the buffet table gets its own moment too, with menus tailored to the couple’s tastes and the pastry team taking the wedding cake seriously, customising the wildest Pinterest designs you saved at 2 a.m. and swore you could absolutely pull off.

Eventually, after hours of flailing about and calling it dancing, even the most committed couples start eyeing the exits. A complimentary luxury suite that’s as far away from the in-laws as possible awaits them upstairs, while preferential accommodation rates mean the rest of the wedding party can avoid the post-wedding convoy home, because after several hours of politely pretending to know everyone’s names, the last thing anyone needs is a 45-minute drive home.

And then, mercifully, comes the morning after. The music is off, the heels are somewhere on the floor and nobody is asking where Table 14 should go. The newlyweds can - and are encouraged to - sleep in, turn on Airplane mode, and do the one thing nobody had time for yesterday: absolutely nothing. Then, when their anniversary finally rolls around, special rates give them an excuse to come back to the scene of the commitment, only this time without 1,000 guests, three seating charts and an auntie asking when the first baby is coming.
