Underground Pedestrian Tunnel Under Construction at Cultural Square
The tunnel will connect Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal Mosque with the Holy Quran monument without crossing surface traffic.
An underground pedestrian tunnel is under construction at Cultural Square in Sharjah, providing a new crossing between Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal Mosque and the area surrounding the Holy Quran monument.
The tunnel will allow worshippers and visitors to move between the two sides of the square without crossing surface traffic. It is also intended to protect the site’s flowers and landscaping by reducing pedestrian movement through planted areas.
Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, discussed the project during a telephone interview on Sharjah Broadcasting Authority’s ‘Direct Line’ programme.
The underpass is also expected to make it easier for visitors to access the monument for photographs without disrupting traffic around the square.
Sheikh Sultan described the Holy Quran monument as a symbol of the Quran’s role as a guiding reference for Muslims, adding that Cultural Square could also be known as Quran Square or Book Square.
