US Embassy Opens American Corner at Mansoura Public Library
The space will offer free English courses, job and technology training, and access to hundreds of books and online resources.
The US Embassy in Cairo has opened an American Corner at Mansoura’s Misr Public Library, creating a permanent community space offering free English-language courses, technology and job-skills training, and access to more than 600 books and online resources.
The opening took place during the embassy’s ‘Pop-Up USA’ event, with US Chargé d’Affaires Robert Silverman joined by Dakahlia Governor Tarek Marzouk and Misr Public Libraries Fund Director Ambassador Reda Al-Taify.
The launch formed part of a wider programme in Mansoura marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. Activities included a Delta-wide football tournament for boys aged 12 to 13 from 26 sports clubs, a street festival with carnival games and information booths, an ‘Ask a Diplomat Anything’ session, and a concert featuring American singer Samantha Takes, Egyptian singer and producer Ahmed El-Haggar, and the Cairo Big Band Society.
During the visit, Silverman also toured Dar Ibn Luqman, where French King Louis IX was imprisoned after his failed medieval campaign in Egypt. He said the Mansoura programme was intended to strengthen long-term Egyptian-American ties by engaging young people in the Nile Delta, while the new American Corner will remain as a permanent feature of the downtown public library overlooking the Nile.
