SeaWorld Abu Dhabi Welcomes Region’s First Walrus Calf
A Pacific walrus calf has been born to Smooshi at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, marking the region's first walrus birth in a zoological facility and supporting the park's conservation and education efforts.
SeaWorld Abu Dhabi has announced the birth of a healthy Pacific walrus calf in its Arctic Realm, marking the first walrus calf to be born in a zoological facility in the region. The calf was born to walrus mother Smooshi under the supervision of the park's veterinary and animal care teams. According to SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, both the mother and calf are in good health and are currently bonding in the Arctic Realm's dedicated walrus habitat. Designed to replicate Arctic conditions, the habitat features cold temperatures and natural light cycles intended to support the species' natural behaviours. Specialised veterinary and animal care support was provided throughout Smooshi's pregnancy and delivery. The birth is being highlighted as a significant milestone for the facility and as part of its broader conservation and education mission. SeaWorld Abu Dhabi said the walruses in its care are involved in educational and conservation-focused programs aimed at increasing public awareness of Arctic marine life and the environmental challenges facing polar ecosystems. Through these initiatives, visitors can learn about issues such as climate change and the loss of sea ice, both of which continue to affect Arctic wildlife. SeaWorld Abu Dhabi is certified by Global Humane and holds accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and other international animal welfare organisations.
