Saqqara Development Project Launched to Enhance Visitor Experience

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a comprehensive project to upgrade infrastructure and visitor services at the Saqqara archaeological site, as part of wider efforts to improve the experience at Egypt's heritage attractions.

Implemented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the project will upgrade internal roads and visitor facilities to improve movement throughout the UNESCO World Heritage site while increasing its capacity to accommodate both Egyptian visitors and international tourists.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy said the project reflects an integrated approach that combines the preservation of Saqqara's historical value with improvements to infrastructure and visitor services. He added that the initiative will reinforce the site's position as one of Egypt's leading archaeological destinations while supporting the sustainable protection and development of its cultural heritage.

According to Hisham El Leithy, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the development includes upgrading the site's internal road network to make it easier for visitors to move between monuments and archaeological attractions. He said all works will adhere to international technical and engineering standards for archaeological sites to preserve Saqqara's historic character and archaeological significance while creating a safer and more accessible environment for visitors and tour groups.

The project will also introduce a range of new visitor amenities. Amr El-Tayeb, Director General of the Saqqara Archaeological Area, said the upgrades include new seating areas, shaded rest stops at key locations to protect visitors from direct sunlight and improvements to on-site facilities. The enhancements are intended to raise the overall quality of the visitor experience in line with international best practices for archaeological site management.
