Egypt Ranked Among Africa’s Top Three Solar Markets in 2025
Around 500 MW of new solar capacity was added during the year, placing Egypt behind South Africa and Nigeria.
Egypt ranked among Africa’s three largest markets for new solar power capacity additions in 2025, adding around 500 megawatts during the year, according to a report by the Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center.
South Africa led the continent with around 1.6 GW of additions, followed by Nigeria with approximately 803 MW and Egypt in third place.
Africa’s installed solar capacity increased from around 18.4 GW in 2024 to 22.2 GW in 2025, with annual additions rising 54% year-on-year. The continent’s 10 largest solar markets accounted for around 90% of new capacity, while distributed systems represented approximately 44% of recorded additions.
The IDSC expects Egypt to add around 2 GW of solar capacity in 2026 as investment expands across generation and local manufacturing. Planned projects include solar cell and module factories with capacities of up to 2 GW, alongside additional panel production and energy storage facilities. The centre estimated that Egypt’s solar sector supported around 5,900 jobs in 2024.
