Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah to Deliver ‘Liberation Medicine’ Lecture at AUC

Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah, professor of conflict medicine at the American University of Beirut and Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, is set to deliver a lecture entitled ‘Liberation Medicine’ at AUC’s Oriental Hall in Tahrir Square on November 7th, 2026.

Taking its title from his forthcoming book, Abu-Sittah’s lecture will trace his personal, intellectual and professional journey from the 1982 siege of Beirut to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. In his talk, he argues that the clinic can become a site where oppression is both embodied and resisted.

The lecture will conclude by exploring Liberation Medicine as a way to turn clinical knowledge into a practice of liberation, offering an alternative to both colonial humanitarianism and the corporate-driven healthcare systems of the Global North.

The lecture is part of an annual series of memorial lectures honouring the memory and legacy of Edward Said, a Palestinian-American academic and literary critic best known for his foundational critique of Orientalism in his 1978 book of the same name. Said is also widely regarded as a foundational figure in postcolonial studies.
