What Does Your Vegetable Zodiac Say About You?

Hundreds of years ago, an Alexandrian merchant created a vegetable zodiac, attuned to the local harvest season. Here’s everything you need to know about your vegetable horoscope.

What Does Your Vegetable Zodiac Say About You?

In the sixth century C.E., Alexandrian merchant Cosmas Indicopleustes, a devout Christian, believed that zodiac signs did not align with his faith. He replaced the familiar astrological signs, which he perceived as worshipping paganistic gods, with crops that correspond to the signs.

Thus was born the vegetable zodiac, attuned to the Alexandrian harvest season. Here’s everything you need to know about your vegetable horoscope.

Aries: garlic skoroda

Aries bring all the spice and juicy drama to their loved ones, just like aromatic garlic. Found well-preserved in Tutankhamum’s tomb, garlic indicates potency and main character energy. Considered an aphrodisiac by many at the time, the vegetable was forbidden in some versions of the dietary calendar — a warning that Aries are serious lovers. We love you Aries, but be careful not to overpower those around you!

Taurus: wild barley kinnai

This cereal is the basis of nourishment for animals and the masses, providing the essential ingredient in common bread. Tauruses play a grounding role in the lives of their loved ones, stepping away from judgement and maintaining fair, unprejudiced perspectives. Thank you Tauruses for extending your kindness to nature and wildlife.

Gemini: nuts and apricots karya armenia

The subject of ancient debate, karya armenia refers to nuts, and based on the colour reproduction of the zodiac, armenika, or apricots. A recent arrival in Egypt at the time, apricots signify fresh starts, new perspectives, and the unique ability to reset among Geminis. While apricots enjoy a very short season in the Mediterranean, Geminis should be careful not to be too fleeting in the lives of their loved ones — if you come and go too many times, you may lose connection with the people you care about most.

Cancer: wheat sitos and sycamore fig skopymora

Wheat is one of the main ingredients of the Mediterranean food triad, for which Cosmas says we owe thanks to God. Used in white bread in more well-off households, wheat shows that Cancers can be proud, elevated, and a little bit stubborn — perhaps to a fault. Beware not to be too harsh on your loved ones, your standards are high but you must manage them!

As wheat is a basic food, Cosmas paired the fancy cereal with the sycamore fig, borne from a tree that was brought to Egypt without the wasp that pollinates it. Until today, sycamore figs can be found in Cairo, unpollinated and without fruit, explaining Cancers’ fear of abandonment.

Leo: figs syka and grapes staphylia

Another ingredient in the Mediterranean food triad, grapes were essential due to their production of wine, a divine provision. Wine indicates that Leos are light-hearted, well-loved, and the life of the party. But just because you want to have a good time doesn’t mean you can ignore responsibility and accountability. Remember to take some things seriously.

As wine was considered a basic food in the triad, Cosmas paired it with regular figs, a soft fruit prized for its healthy nutrients. Leos, you bring wellness to those around you and we love you for it.

Virgo: olives elaiai and peaches rhodakina

Virgos, you keep things running smoothly. Olives are the third of the Mediterranean food triad, allowing for olive oil production. You are the starting point for big projects and the final touch to the most important events in the lives of your loved ones. The whole world loves you and you have no enemies.

As the final basic food in the triad, Virgos were also assigned peaches, indicating their sweet personalities and loving nature.

Libra: dates phoinikes

Dates are sweet, calorie-dense fruits that provide energy, fibre and vital micronutrients, but eating too many can be harmful. Beloved in modern Egyptian culture, dates indicate that Libras need to be careful not to give too much to one person. The close connections you form with others should not limit you, so spend time with others in calculated doses — don’t cling. Make sure to spread your sweetness outside of your immediate circle!

Scorpio: asparagus asparagoi

An acquired taste, this superfood is a sign that Scorpios are the best once you get to know them. Contrary to its modern reputation, the asparagus was so cherished by ancient Egyptians that the crop was offered in rituals to appease their gods. This royal status is still held among Scorpios, who are quiet but refined. The same way asparagus was cultivated and consumed as a medicinal plant in Egypt for over 2,000 years, Scorpios are healing to those around them, making the best supporters to their lifelong friends.

Sagittarius: mallows malachai

Mallows are a category of superfoods that contain molokhia, and just like the glutinous, anti-inflammatory national favourite, Sagittariuses know how to keep their loved ones calm. At the same time, they might tend to slip away if not careful. Sagittariuses, make sure to pair up with grounded staples — this is your sign to seek stability and stop running from situations that scare you.

Capricorn: endives entybia

These bitter greens need a little bit of sweetness in their lives. Endives are deeply rooted in local history, with ancient Egyptians being credited as the first to cultivate wild chicory. Today, they’re used in fresh salads and traditional warm Middle Eastern dishes like Hindbeh. Capricorns, we applaud you for your versatility and ability to get along with everyone — you are able to mix in any social setting without complaints. At the same time, make sure to manage your energy and link up with sweet signs to stay balanced.

Aquarius: palm shoots alatia

Hard and thick on the outside, palm shoots are tender and sweet from within. This edible growing core of certain palm trees, also known as palm hearts, is the part that develops into the tree’s trunk and crown of leaves. Despite their chill vibe and hard exterior, palm shoots show us that Aquariuses are very vulnerable on the inside. At times immature, they have a lot of heart and ability to grow. Aquariuses, we love your cool front, but it’s time for you to open up to the people you trust.

Pisces: citrons kitra

The citron is an ancient, bumpy citrus fruit with a thick, fragrant rind, loved for its aromatic zest and thick, sweet pith. The fruit shows that Pisces have a zest for life unlike any others, with thick skin that makes them resilient to even serious setbacks. While they bring sweetness and positivity to their loved ones, Pisces should beware not to overtake the conversation or outshine others — leave room for everyone else.
