Work Begins on Largest Government Data Centre of Its Kind in Riyadh
The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority’s Hexagon data centre will be the largest tier IV-rated government data centre in the world.
The foundation stone has been laid for the Hexagon data centre, a large-scale government facility developed by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, marking a major addition to national digital infrastructure in Riyadh.
The data centre is being built on a 2.7 million square metre site in the capital and is designed with a total power capacity of 480 megawatts. The facility is intended to support the growing volume of digital government services, with an emphasis on availability, security, and operational continuity for public sector data systems.
According to the Uptime Institute, the Hexagon project is expected to become the largest Tier IV-rated government data centre globally. Tier IV represents the highest international standard for data centres, indicating full fault tolerance and the ability to operate continuously during maintenance or unexpected disruptions.
Environmental efficiency has been integrated into the project’s design through energy-saving technologies, smart cooling systems, and low-power computing solutions aimed at reducing overall energy consumption. Officials have indicated that the Hexagon facility will be followed by additional data centres across the country as demand for secure, large-scale data processing continues to expand.
