Middle East Archive's 'Cairo Portraits' Makes Cairo Debut at Rizo Misr
The new photography book combines the work of Stefan Ruiz with the hand-coloured portraits of Armenian-Egyptian Artin Sarafian.
Middle East Archive, an independent platform dedicated to preserving and publishing photographic material from across the region, will launch its latest book, 'Cairo Portraits', at Rizo Masr in Maadi on October 22nd. The book brings together photographs taken in Cairo by American photographer Stefan Ruiz in 2003 with 20th-century studio portraits by Armenian-Egyptian photographer Artin Sarafian.
Designed around a 114-page folding structure, the book allows both bodies of work to be viewed simultaneously, creating a physical record of the brief intersection between two photographers and their different approaches to portraiture.
The launch will run from 7 PM to 10 PM and bring together the book’s curator, Middle East Archive founder Romaisa Baddar, and its designer, Egyptian bookmaker Dania Hany, alongside food, drinks and music.
