Greece to Hire Seasonal Farmers From Egypt Amidst Labour Shortage
Greece will take in around 5,000 seasonal farm workers under a 2022 deal signed with Egypt.
Greece will take in around 5,000 seasonal farm workers from Egypt starting this summer to take on temporary farming jobs under a deal to tackle a labour shortage, the Greek Ministry of Migration announced.
An exodus of workers during Greece’s economic crisis, a shrinking population and strict migration rules have left the country struggling to find tens of thousands of workers to fill vacancies in farming, tourism, construction and other sectors.
The decision comes under an agreement between Egypt and Greece signed in November 2022 to tackle the worker shortage in the Greek agricultural sector.
The Greek minister stated that the two countries also discussed expanding the agreement to include the Greek construction and tourism sectors.
